How it works

NFC vs QR code business card: which works better in the UAE?

An NFC card shares your details with a tap; a QR code works with any phone camera. How they compare on phone support, speed, printing cost, updates and analytics in the UAE, and why most people should use both.

An NFC business card shares your details when someone taps it on their phone. A QR code business card shares them when someone points their camera at a code. Both can open the same digital business card, so the real question isn't which one to choose, but where each one works best.

The short answer for the UAE: use both. An NFC card is the quickest way to share in person, and a QR code reaches any phone with a camera, including phones that don't respond to a tap. Every Cardly.ae digital card comes with its own QR code, and an NFC card is an optional extra.

NFC vs QR code at a glance

Feature NFC card QR code
How it's shared The other person taps the card on their phone The other person scans the code with their camera
Phone support iPhone XS and later read NFC tags without an app; Android phones with NFC switched on Any smartphone with a camera
Speed One tap, with no camera to open Open the camera, frame the code, tap the link
Range A few centimetres Across a table, a stand or a room, depending on print size
Cost A one-time physical card or sticker Nothing extra: it prints with the rest of your artwork
Works on screens No Yes: slides, email signatures, video calls
Can the details change after printing? Yes, if the chip holds a link Yes, if the code holds a link; no, if it holds the contact itself
Analytics Taps can be counted when the chip opens a link Scans can be counted when the code opens a link

On Cardly.ae, NFC chips and QR codes both open your card's link, so you can update your details at any time, and your analytics count NFC taps, QR scans and link clicks separately.

Which phones in the UAE can read each one?

Android leads in the UAE: about 78% of mobile page views came from Android and about 22% from iOS in August 2026 (77.53% and 22.46%, StatCounter). Those figures describe web traffic, not which phones have NFC.

  • iPhone: Apple states that iPhone XS and later read NFC tags in the background, so an NFC business card opens without an app while the phone is in use. Background reading pauses while the camera or Apple Pay is in use, and in airplane mode (Apple Developer).
  • Android: many Android phones have NFC, often used for contactless payments, but it has to be switched on and not every model has it. We haven't found a reliable public figure for the share of phones in the UAE that can read NFC.
  • QR codes: the iPhone Camera app reads QR codes directly (Apple Support). On Android, many camera apps read them, and so does Google Lens in Chrome (Google Chrome Help).

That gap is why every Cardly.ae card also has a QR code. If a phone doesn't respond to a tap, the other person scans instead and lands on the same card.

Where NFC wins

  • Meeting in person. A tap takes less effort than opening the camera, which makes NFC the natural choice at meetings, property viewings and on an exhibition stand.
  • Making an impression. Handing over a well-made card makes a first meeting memorable, and a metal or bamboo NFC card is a talking point.
  • Staying current. A Cardly.ae NFC card holds a short link that you can point at a different card from your dashboard, for example after a job change, without reprogramming the chip.

Where a QR code wins

  • Reach. Any phone with a camera can scan it, whatever the model.
  • Distance and screens. A QR code works on booth banners, brochures, slides, email signatures and video calls, where nobody can tap anything.
  • Cost. It adds nothing to a print job, so it can go on everything you print.

Two kinds of QR code business card

Not every QR code on a business card works the same way:

  • A link QR code opens your digital card. You can change your details at any time without reprinting, and scans can be counted, but it needs a data connection to open. Every Cardly.ae card has one.
  • A vCard QR code holds your contact details inside the code itself, so the phone can save them without opening a web page. Once it's printed, though, it can't be updated, and nothing is counted. Our free vCard QR code generator makes one, with your name in Arabic and English.

For anything printed in bulk, the link version is usually the safer choice. A vCard QR code suits a one-off where you're sure your details won't change.

What each one costs

A QR code is free: download it and add it to anything you print. An NFC card is a one-time purchase. Cardly.ae sells an NFC sticker for AED 49, a PVC card for AED 99, a bamboo card for AED 149 and a metal card for AED 249, all of which work with the Free plan. For prices across the UAE market, see the NFC business card price guide.

Our recommendation: use both

  1. Create your digital card and download its QR code. It's free to start.
  2. Put the QR code wherever tapping isn't possible: your email signature, brochures, booth graphics, presentation slides and your phone's lock screen.
  3. Add an NFC card if you meet people face to face often. It gives the other person the quickest way to save your details, and the QR code is there for any phone that doesn't respond to a tap.

Frequently asked questions

Is NFC better than a QR code for a business card?

Neither is better everywhere. NFC is quicker face to face, while a QR code works with any phone camera and on screens and print. In the UAE, where not every phone reads NFC, the best setup is an NFC card for meetings with a QR code as the backup.

Do I need an NFC business card?

Not to get started. A digital card with a QR code covers most situations, and it's free. An NFC card is worth adding if you meet people in person often, for example at viewings, client meetings or exhibitions.

Can I update a QR code business card after printing it?

Only if the code holds a link to your digital card. A vCard QR code stores your details inside the code, so it can't be changed once it's printed.

What share of phones in the UAE can read NFC?

There's no reliable public figure. Android accounted for about 78% of UAE mobile page views in August 2026 (StatCounter), and Apple states that iPhone XS and later read NFC tags without an app. On Android it depends on the model and on NFC being switched on, which is why a QR code backup matters.

Is it safe to scan a QR code on a business card?

The code holds only a link or contact details. Phones show the link before opening it, so people can check that it's your card's address before they tap.
